| The Watts Towers are the most powerful examples of outsider art I have ever had the fortune to see firsthand. They are transcendent, majestic, hypnotic, compelling. They exhibit forthrightly the obsessed act of their creation. That they have been transformed symbolically by the 1968 riots does not diminish their artistic power -- that is instead proof of their continuing vitality as living urban monuments. |
