The podium. The podium on which the conservancy sits serves several important functions. The podium will be of a rougher, coarser material (perhaps rusticated stone or concrete) to contrast with the more delicate conservancy. It relates in form to the angular shapes of the Libeskind master plan. The podium’s height, 30’ from its base, is set at the height of the plaza level of the former World Trade Center. It allows all visitors to enjoy a view of the butterflies. The podium could also serve as a speaker’s platform on days of public ceremonies.
The podium is surrounded by a series of low, broad steps, whose highly visible risers shall have a series of indentations inscribed with names of the victims. These steps are broad enough to have room for the remembrances that visitors may leave at the site. The remembrances and gifts would create a ring around the Memorial; the butterfly conservancy rises up out of these symbols of loss as an affirmation of renewal.
