(being an entry to the competition for a plutonium disposal facility and memorial sponsored by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists).
Their island ravaged by the terrifying Minotaur, the Minoans sought advice from the Delphic Oracle to save themselves from this deadly creature. The Oracle told the Minoans to build a maze which would keep the monster from escaping, and Daedalus built a maze to contain him.
Plutonium is our Minotaur, and we too will build our maze.
The dangerous lifespan of this material, compared to the duration of human endeavor, approaches eternity. Signs, gates, locks will crumble to dust while this metal's glow is still young.
This design proposes containing the plutonium in the center of a colossal maze, constructed of cast concrete walls thrusting a hundred feet into the sky. It is built over generations, so that no one can remember where its true center lies. It becomes impenetrable because of its vastness. In this way it always forbids, menaces, and so protects.
