Joseph Plecnik (b Ljubljana, 23 Jan 1872; d Trnovo, Ljubljana, 7 Oct 1957).

A student of Otto Wagner in Vienna, at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, he studied alongside Olbrich and Fabiani.

Moving to Ljubljana, Plecnik became the major architect and planner for the town, designing public buildings, bridges, even park furniture for the Slovenian capital.

On the site of a baroque palace destroyed in an 1890's earthquake, Plecnik was commissioned to design Slovenia's University and National Library. Constructed (1936-41).
